about

Mala Nota - the sophomore record by Miami-based experimental trio Pavlov's Bell is a conceptual, long-form piece of music divided in ten pieces. The album's framing device has us explore the collective psyche of 10 diverse people accompanied by densely layered instrumental music that conjures feelings that are equal parts beauty and malice. Ghastly yet melancholic. Futuristic but nostalgic.

The band brings their previously established musical vernacular of synthesized, baritone demeanor to the next logical step on this record with the aid of additional organic instrumentation; which features harp, saxophone, human voices, violin and timbres so abstract and processed that they can take the form of whatever function the particular musical moment necessitates.

Mala Nota imposes a cathartic discomfort on the listener. It postulates questions we know the answers to but struggle accepting. The album asks us to take a good look at the things we ignore and to not give those things power over us. The music pats you on the shoulder in reassurance; It says that despite these existential musings- it is not only healthy, but crucial to the human condition for us to be inquisitive about death and to know that we have the power to change who we are and our circumstances for the better.
